We first started work on the newest version of our AirPort Express extender Airfoil over one year ago. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Airfoil 3 is now shipping. Airfoil has always allowed you to send any audio to your AirPort Express, but this update brings with it some major feature updates. They may just knock your socks off, so watch out.

Airfoil 3 lets you transmit any audio to multiple AirPort Express units, providing perfect synchronization between units. You can now play audio locally too, in sync with remote playback. The version of Safari used by the iPod touch is ostensibly the same as the version used by the iPhone, but carries a slightly different user agent string.

• iPod Touch user agent string Mozila/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Geckto) Version/3.0 Mobile/3A101a Safari/419.3
• iPhone user agent string Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1C28 Safari/419.3

Notice the different in device identifier, and the different build number.

Unfortunately, this means that the iPod touch will not, currently, navigate immediately to the iPhone-optimized versions to which many sites automatically redirect — a temporary problem until site authors adjust for the change.

One of the very first questions that popped into my head after hearing, during the liveblog last week, that the iPod Touch had wireless capability was how soon the hackers would get wifi VOIP running on it. Michael over at the Apple Gazette had the same thought, and he’s even got a plan on how to do it– if the iPhone’s mic-enabled headphones work in the iPod Touch,

we’re golden.

Unfortunately, I agree with what Erica said on the last Talkcast– it’s probably not that easy. But even she agreed that if someone can hook the dock connection up to a microphone, then we might be in business. Skype is already working (in some form) on the iPhone, and considering the iPod Touch and the iPhone are as similar as Apple says they are, the software shouldn’t be a problem. Getting the audio in and out to the right places is where the trouble lies.

But after everything we’ve seen come down on the iPhone, you won’t catch me betting against the hackers. If there’s a will, there’s a way, and so if you really want to get your iPod Touch running wifi VOIP (like some kind of psuedo iPhone clone), my guess is that you’ll eventually be able to do it.

The newly introduced iPod Touch bears striking resemblance to the iPhone, aesthetically and functionally. It uses the same multi-touch screen, apparently runs a scaled down version of OS X that runs Safari and a YouTube application, uses WiFi, has an accelerometer that allows the display to shift based on physical orientation, and uses the same ‘SpringBoard’ interface to launch its applications.

There are, however, some important differences between the devices:

• There is no email client on the iPod Touch
• There is no Maps application on the iPod Touch
• There are no Stocks or Weather widgets on the iPod Touch
• There is no built-in camera for the iPod Touch
• The iPod Touch has a differently styled ‘Dock,’ with a reflective surface — akin to the Dock that will debut with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)



• While the iPod Touch is sleeping, the user can tap the home button twice to bring up touch controls on the screen — a feature the iPhone currently lacks
• The iPod Touch has a separate Contacts app — it’s built into the Phone application on the iPhone
• The iPod Touch has separate Video and Music apps, whereas the iPhone has a single ‘iPod’ app that contains these functions
• There is apparently (and obviously) no microphone on the iPod Touch, though it will be interesting to see if such audio-in capabilities could be enabled via a third-party device.
• The iPod touch’s headphone jack is on the bottom of the device
• The iPod touch lacks a built-in external speaker
• The iPod touch’s screen appears to be of a slightly higher quality than the iPhone, with 163 pixels per inch to the iPhone’s 160 pixels per inch.

We may very well see some of the iPod Touch’s enhanced features make their way to the iPhone in a forthcoming software/firmware update. Apple has already announced plans to deliver the WiFi iTunes Store to the iPhone later this month via an update.

Apple just made a whole slew of iPod-related announcements, with just the faintest hint of gamer love. Revealed during Steve Jobs’ special iPod event, both the revamped iPod nano and the iPod classic will ship with three games: Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike.

I was a little concerned that no mention was made of the Nike+iPod Sport Kit during today’s introduction of the new iPod nano (known as the ‘fatty’ in some circles). Even Apple’s new iPod nano web page doesn’t mention Nike+iPod integration anywhere.

However, skip over to the redesigned Nike+iPod page an you’ll see how the interface has been redesigned to match both the new nano menu system and the Nikeplus website.

It seems as though not much else has changed. There’s no mention of any new features or functionality, and Nike+iPod still only works with the iPod nano (despite the new iPod touch using flash storage).

More to come when I’m able to get my hands on the new nano.
