Safari for iPod touch has different user agent string, may not go directly to iPhone-optimized sites

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

The version of Safari used by the iPod touch is ostensibly the same as the version used by the iPhone, but carries a slightly different user agent string.

  • iPod Touch user agent string Mozila/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Geckto) Version/3.0 Mobile/3A101a Safari/419.3
  • iPhone user agent string Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1C28 Safari/419.3

Notice the different in device identifier, and the different build number.

Unfortunately, this means that the iPod touch will not, currently, navigate immediately to the iPhone-optimized versions to which many sites automatically redirect — a temporary problem until site authors adjust for the change.

The Many Names of Mr. Clean

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

Mr. Clean - USA

Don Limpio - Spain

Maestro Limpio - Mexico

Mr. Proper - Europe and Eastern Europe

Monsieur Propre - France

Meister Proper - Germany
Mr. Clean [wiki] by any other name is one heck of a global cleaning product. Did you know that although most people think the guy is a genie (because of the bald head and the earring), the real Mr. Clean was supposed to be a sailor?

Update 9/15/07 - here are some more:

M. Net - French Canada
Thanks Algonkin!

Mastro Lindo - Italy
Thanks Pola!

Making the impossible possible: iPod Touch VOIP

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

One of the very first questions that popped into my head after hearing, during the liveblog last week, that the iPod Touch had wireless capability was how soon the hackers would get wifi VOIP running on it. Michael over at the Apple Gazette had the same thought, and he’s even got a plan on how to do it– if the iPhone’s mic-enabled headphones work in the iPod Touch,

we’re golden.

Unfortunately, I agree with what Erica said on the last Talkcast– it’s probably not that easy. But even she agreed that if someone can hook the dock connection up to a microphone, then we might be in business. Skype is already working (in some form) on the iPhone, and considering the iPod Touch and the iPhone are as similar as Apple says they are, the software shouldn’t be a problem. Getting the audio in and out to the right places is where the trouble lies.

But after everything we’ve seen come down on the iPhone, you won’t catch me betting against the hackers. If there’s a will, there’s a way, and so if you really want to get your iPod Touch running wifi VOIP (like some kind of psuedo iPhone clone), my guess is that you’ll eventually be able to do it.

I didn’t realize that LEGO sculpture was a competitive sport, able to be won utterly and without challenge, but apparently I was wrong.

More anatomical Paraphernalia!

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Lately I’ve been intrigued and excited by the amount of anatomical products out there, from t-shirts to tiny anatomical model toys. Yes kids, anatomy is cool.

Now, thanks to another one of my readers, I’ve been pointed to Paraphernalia, a little studio in Manchester, UK producing handmade anatomical necklaces. The owner, Ms. Vanda, makes each necklace using vintage illustrations, printed and cut plastic, and silver-plated chains. The whole idea and the illustrations are fantastic!

Heart necklace

Labrynth of the inner ear

Brain necklace

The Anatomica collection features old anatomical drawings and woodcuts of a variety of organs and body parts. It was our first collection! Currently part of the collection are a Heart (pictured), a Brain, a Skull, a Cochlea, a Molar, and a Ribcage.

Her website is just lovely and she also has a variety of other necklaces available. Be sure to have a look!
